So, how important really are your summers for college applications?
Everyone loves spending their summer relaxing. But the truth is, for top colleges in America, admissions officers want more. They want to see that students are being productive and working on their passions.
We know summer is right around the corner. If you don’t know how you’re going to spend it yet, don’t worry! We have your back. To help you find the perfect activities to strengthen your application, begin by asking yourself the following questions:
1. What extracurriculars do I do during the year?
If you have specific passions and interests that you spend a lot of time on during the year, working on them during the summer is a great way to show colleges your consistent passion. If you compete in debate during the school year, try signing up for an online debate camp. If you sing in the choir, compete in a singing competition. Make it easy for colleges to know who you are and what you love.
2. What are my career goals?
If you don’t know yet, that’s completely okay! If you do know, though, finding an activity that complements your goals will help colleges understand why you want to go into the field that you do. If you want to be a software engineer, develop your own app. If you want to be a doctor, work on your own medical research project.
3. What’s missing in my application?
Depending on what grade you’re in, you may have a sense of what’s missing in your college application. Maybe you’ve been doing poorly in science classes or maybe you haven’t had the chance to show off what a great writer you are. Whatever it may be, the summer is a great time to find activities that strengthen those weaknesses or highlight hidden strengths.
4. Have I taken all of my standardized tests yet?
Most colleges require the SAT/ACT for admission and many also require SAT subject tests. Have you taken the SAT/ACT? Do you have 2-3 SAT subject tests under your belt? If not, the summer is a great time to study for these exams. At AE2, we’re running summer programs for the SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests all summer. We’d love to help you achieve your dream score!
